Phoenix, AZ - Summer, 1975 - Training for Honeywell

5/1/75

Today started a new half century of my life. I hereby resolve to read the Bible, prey and write a few highlights of my day each of the remaining days of my life.

I am in Phoenix training on the 6400 perphials. I have been here since April 21, 1975. I am staying at the Ideal Boarding House at 1025 N. 2nd St. The food is excellent and room adequate. My work shift starting this morning, is from 3am to 12 noon.

Soon after lunch, Mary Ellen called to wish me a Happy Birthday. I went to the library to return a book and check out one on Space Science. I read some more in “Always in Prayer” by E. F. Hollock, wrote Jeff a letter and now it is supper time. I will go to bed soon after supper so I can be ready for class at 3 in the morning.

The weather here is fair and warm.

5/2/75

I will qualify something I wrote yesterday. I will honor my resolution as often as I am able.

After lunch, I took a short nap - then drove back to school to call Mary Ellen on the free phone. I also talked to Jeff. The mail man just brought a letter from Mary Ellen as I returned to the boarding house. It was mailed Tuesday April 29. I finished reading “Always in Prayer” and started the Space Science book. It is interesting and goes into some of the mathematics of orbital flight that is somewhat over my head. It doesn’t ruin the book for me, though. We had fish for supper.

The weather is fair and warm.

5/3/75

This morning was slow and easy. After breakfast I chatted with Carl, the landlord, about religion and other things. He is a Christian, too. I walked to the post office, read and napped. After lunch I went to the “Valley of the Sun” school for the retarded and talked to Phil Seale, a paraplegic 28 years old. I gave him a current issue of Reader’s Digest and a “Good News for Modern Man”. From there I went to Honeywell to call home. After supper I read, wrote checks, walked to the post office again, talked to Ray, my roommate, about politics, etc. I read a chapter in the Bible and am now going to bed. Fair and hot today.

5/4/75

I had lunch today with Glen Crotts. After lunch Glen, our Sunday School teacher, Mr. Rice, and I rode about 40 miles to visit a mission church building that will be ready for services next Sunday.

(Glen Crots was a deacon in the church I was attending and I think he had something to do with Baptist Association finances. Mr. Rice was the Sunday School teacher.)

5/5/75

Today is fair, windy and cool. I am still on the early morning shift. (3:30 - 12:00). After lunch I picked up a class mate, Lloyd Schesingher, and drove to a small airport in North Phoenix. I got the name of a doctor who gave flight physicals and picked up a form to apply for radio operator’s license. While with Lloyd, I looked at an apartment with July and August in mind. Mary Ellen, Jeff and Nancy will be here then.

5/6/75

The weather was fair and cool again today. After lunch, I read part of “The Kneeling Christian” (by an unknown Christian) while my clothes washed and dried. Then I drove to the school and called my sister, Jane, in WV and Mary Ellen. I spent the rest of the afternoon helping Glenn Crotts sand his Model “T”. After supper, my usual letter writing and Bible study.

5/7/75

Fair and warm today. I bought a cassette tape recorder today. I also sanded some on Mr. Crotts’ model “T”.

5/8/75

Fair and warm, nothing unusual today.

5/9/75

Fair and warm today, almost hot. The breeze blew and humidity low so it was still comfortable.

I got a nice long letter from Mary Ellen and a letter from Nancy today. I enjoyed both. I spent the afternoon reading and writing letters to Mary Ellen and Nancy. I will write to Jeanie before I go to bed.

5/10/75

Fair and hot. I washed a load of clothes and read most of the May “Reader’s Digest” this morning. The mail brought a letter from Mary Ellen and one from my sister, Mary Vitile.

This afternoon I visited Phil. We went to a park about 4 blocks away with the rest of his cottage. We sat in the shade and washed the others play. We didn’t talk much. Phil was contented. I felt that my presents was sufficient.

5/11/75

Fair and hot as usual. We have breakfast at 6:00 every morning including Sat. & Sun. I showered before breakfast. After breakfast, I polished shoes, read Sunday School lesson and visited with my roommate until time to go to Sunday School. After Church I walked back almost too late for lunch. I will not try to make it back for lunch on Sundays any more. They eat at 11:30. It was 12:30 when I got here. I visited a while and then drove around looking for park with pool and tennis courts. Hopefully I can rent an apartment near such a park for when Mary Ellen, Jeff and Nancy come out in July. I didn’t find one but have more to look at. I stopped by Honeywell and called home. I have to go to bed early again because of my shift.

5/12/75

102o today, fair and low humidity. We finished studying the card reader and card punch today. Tomorrow we start the tape handler on a different shift (11:45 - 8:0 pm). I slept some after lunch, read and played dominoes with Lewis, my roommate.

5/13/75

104o, fair and dry. I drove to the post office this morning and then drove around S. Phoenix a while including through the airport, Sky Harbor. Then I read until lunch time. After work I wrote Mother and Mary Ellen letters. I will now read the Bible, prey and go to bed.

5/14/75

Hot and dry. I will leave that off until it changes. I finished reading the Space Science book and returned it to the library. I have written to Mary Ellen and will now read the Bible and retire.

5/15/75

I finished reading “Jesus, the Man of Prayer” this morning. I also mowed the back yard here. I finished the required lab adjustments on the tape handler today. Tomorrow and Monday will be troubleshooting. One letter form Mary Ellen today.

5/16/75

The weather made the news today. It was not as hot as usual - in the mid to high seventies - and it was partly cloudy with a few sprinkles.

The top radiator hose ruptures on the car on my way back from class tonight. It took me about an hour to walk abut ½ mile to get a hose, return and put it on.

5/17/75

I hope I did the right thing today. When I got back from visiting Phil, an old man in a wheel chair and with only one leg had been rented the third bed in the room with Louis and me. He will need help from wheel chair to bed and bathroom. Louis was upset. Lewis is not strong enough to help the man. Carl, the proprietor is away. Dick is acting on Carl’s behalf. I talked to Dick who agreed to move the old man to another room where he would be by himself and Dick would take care of him. I feel bad about putting the old man out. He needs someone with him. What does this do to his feelings? If I did wrong, God, please tell me so and how to make amends.

5/18/75

I had Sunday dinner with I. D. Rice, my Sunday School teacher here. He is also chairman of the deacons. Tonight’s service was by an ensemble from Grand Canyon Baptist College. They alternated between song and testimony - Quite impressive.

5/19/75

We finished the tape handler course today. Tomorrow we start studding the disk drive. It will be day shift - 7am - 3:45pm.

I got two letters from Mary Ellen today. I called Jeanie and Mary Ellen today.

5/20/75

Windy and mild today.

I got a letter from Mary Ellen and two cassette tapes from Jeanie. I got a hair cut between class and supper. I cut the front grass and listened to the tapes after supper. I am excited about going home this week-end.

5/21/75

Fair and cool today. High only 70oF.

I had supper at the church today. I also attended the Bible Study and prayer meeting.

5/22/75

Today Carl asked me to move upstairs with Vick so he could move the cripple man in the wheel chair into my previous bed where he would have more room. Louis asked to move in with Vick and me. We have two rooms, bath and kitchenette. It is upstairs but I think we will bet along fine.

I have my ticket.

5/23/75

I am set to go.

5/24/75

he flights were fine. Part of the time we were over broken clouds. Beautiful. More beautiful, though, is being home even if for only a short while.

5/25/75

We went to Sunday School at our church but the school choir that Nancy is in sang at the Methodist Church, so Mary Ellen and I went to church there. They sang well and I recorded the service. David joined us after church for dinner at B & J restaurant in Elm City. David took us boating in Tar Reservoir. He, Jeff and Nancy water skied. Mr. & Mrs. Holster came over for a short visit.

5/26/75

I am back in Phoenix. Mary Ellen and Mrs. Holster took me to the Raleigh Air Port form which I flew to Chicago. After a 3 hr. lay over I flew directly to Phoenix. I left Raleigh at 5:05 Raleigh time and arrived at Phoenix at 10:25 Phoenix time.

5/30/75

Another usual day.

Sat. 5/31/75

This morning I changed my linins, read and went to the library. The book I wanted was out so I came back empty handed.

This afternoon I visited Phil. I asked him about his education. He has finished 6th grade and is studying 7th grade social studies. His weakest subject is math. I quizzed him some on addition, division and fractions. He needs some help. I will take paper to work on next week.

Two more tapes came from Jeanie today. Also a letter from Mary Ellen. Louis and I listened to the tapes after supper and I wrote Jeanie and Mary Ellen letters.

I called my sister, Mary, this afternoon. Mary Ellen did not answer our phone.

Sun. 6/1/75

After supper I called Mary Ellen. They will be free to come June 18.

Mon. 6/2/75

Fri. 6/6/75

Another letter from Mary Ellen; always glad to get her letters. I stopped by church after work. The music director listened to part of the music tape from Jeanie. He thought it would do for Bible School. There will not be anyone at the church Sat. morning so I will have to try to get ready here.

Sat. 6/7/75 & Sun. 6/8/75

I missed Sat. I don’t know how that happened but I do remember what I did. After breakfast I drove to Cortez Park and recorded the narration for Bible School. On the way back I got a car wash by a group from another church. I stopped at Sears and bought an attaché case.

After lunch and no mail, I visited with Phil.

After church today, I went out to eat with Mr. & Mrs. Eaton. After that, I took Louis and Vick for a drive around South Mountain.

Mon. 6/9/75

Bible School was OK except for one 7th grade boy that didn’t want to be there. He said the Bible is dead and slipped out one time. Someone brought him back and I talked to him alone for a while. He left with a smile , but I don’t know if he will be back.
