Later Days
I think it was 2015 when a storm crippled the deer fence. Being 90 years old, I didn¿t feel up to the necessary repairs. Therefore I had grandsons help me remove what was left of the fence. The next spring I did plant two hills of squash. I put pieces of Irish Spring soap in the hills to repel the deer. The plants grew big and bloomed beautifully but no squash. The soap evidently repelled the bees as well as the deer leaving the blooms unpollinated.
Mary Ellen and I delivered Meals on Wheels until I was 90 years old. I still felt I was reasonably safe driver but didn¿t want to keep driving until I wasn¿t safe and cause an accident so I quit driving which ment depending on family and friends for transportation. We also signed up for a senior transport program that was good for doctor¿s appointments. We used it a few times but we were supposed to be ready two hours before our appointment and may wait up to two hours for the ride home. Once the ride did not show up on time so we were able to get a grandchild, Cara, to take us getting there late. It turned out the driver was given the wrong time. Another misunderstanding caused us to no longer use the system. Mary Ellen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She had a lumpectomy, did radiation, and other treatments that kept the cancer in check for a while but it spread to her lung and liver. She felt we were depending too much on family and friends for transportation and talked me into driving again. I had given our car to Cara so I repaired a 1994 Jeep Cherokee that Alyssa had expecting to drive it. However it was high off the ground making it difficult for Mary Ellen to get in. Also it had no air bags or cruse control. I figured if I was going to drive, I was going to drive something dependable and economical. The trade-in value of the Jeep was so low I bought a new 2017 Ford Focus and kept the Jeep."Mary Ellen Proffitt Myers Obituary"

As I got older and a littlt feble I decided living by myself was not wise. Son David and I shopped around looking at assisted living facilitys in this area and decided on Foh Hollow. it was a little out of my price range but Jeff and Jeanie offered to help. i stayed there six months but we were paying for more help than I was using so I moved in with Jeanie and David. In the following year I fell several times. Luckily David and Jeanie were both home each time I fell but they are away quite a bit of the time so we decided it was time to move into a facitilaty. Since Fox Hollow did not have an opening we checked other sites and decided on Southern Pines Gracious Living, a senior retirement community. It is not assisted living but I am not alone. Also, there is the office of Affordable Care where I pay extra for help twice a week. It still costs a lot les than Flox Hollow. I relly liked Fox Holllow more than here but I am getting used to it here. I don¿t want to move again. I moved in here 5/11/2023.
